The Putra Mosque is named after the first Malaysian Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj, one of the major landmarks in Putrajaya.
Its location is adjacent to the Prime Square and overlooking Putrajaya Lake. The mosque was built in June 1997 and completed and delivered to JAKIM on September 1, 1999 for a period of 2 years.

The mosque covers 1.37 hectares. The mosque area starts at the Main Gate until the mosque area. Meanwhile, Putra Square and Souq are not within the mosque area.

The architect who built this mosque is Y. Bhg. Dato 'Dr. Nik Mohamad Bin Mahmood of Senireka Group Sdn. Bhd. The cost of construction of the mosque cost about RM250 million and the maintenance cost of approximately RM100 thousand. Construction of the mosque is the concept of two concepts, namely the Middle East and Malay Traditional.
